Abdelmajid Tebboune was sworn in for a second term as Algeria’s president on Tuesday during a ceremony at the People’s Palace in the capital, following confirmation of his election victory by the country’s constitutional court on Saturday.
According to the election authority, Tebboune received 7.7 million votes, representing 84.3 percent of the total. This figure marks a significant increase from his 2019 win, where he garnered 58 percent of the vote amid an abstention rate of over 46 percent. However, the total is lower than initial results from this year’s election, which faced challenges from two of Tebboune’s opponents.
The 78-year-old president has faced criticism regarding his human rights record since taking office. Amnesty International has reported that authorities under his administration have “maintained their zero-tolerance approach to dissenting opinions” and continued to restrict civic space.
