Burkina Faso recorded a 1-0 win over Mauritania in their opening Group D match at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, with the game taking place on Tuesday 16 January at Stade Bouake.
0-15 minutes: Burkina Faso bossed the possession count during the first 15 minutes of the match, while it was Aboubakary Koita who produced the first goal scoring chances of the match for Mauritania.
15-30 minutes: While Adama Guira came close to scoring for Burkina Faso, the Mauritania duo of Koita and Hemeya Tanjy called Koita into action in quick succession. It was Mourabitounes who held most of the ball during this period.
30-half time: Mauritania continued to edge Burkina Faso to the ball as the half-hour mark approached, while the Burkina Faso defence looked shaky on a couple of occasions. Nonetheless it was Burkina Faso who ended the half on a high as Cedric Badolo’s box entries troubled the Mauritania right-back.
45-60 minutes: Stephane Aziz Ki looked lively at the start of the second-half and forced a save out of goalkeeper Babacar Niasse with a stinging cross across the six-yard area. Burkina Faso made their intentions known leading up to the hour mark and took the game to their opponents at this time.
60-75 minutes: With no notable scoring opportunities created as the 75th minute arrived, both Burkina Faso and Mauritania struggled to assert themselves on the tie for prolonged periods.
75-full time: In what was a climactic end to the encounter, Burkina Faso were awarded a penalty during stoppage time after the VAR officials spotted a foul by Nouh Mohamed El Abd on Bertrand Traore in the area. Traore then stepped up to the spot by scoring the winner for his country.
Burkina Faso: (0) 1 (Traore 98’ P)
