African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat welcomed a United Nations Security Council resolution aimed at achieving a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza.
“The chairperson calls on both Israel and Hamas to unconditionally adhere to this resolution for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and fully implement its terms, without any delay,” read an AU statement issued late Tuesday. The resolution, known as United Nations Security Council Resolution 2735 (2024), outlines a three-phase plan to end the eight-month conflict.
The resolution was adopted on Monday with 14 votes in favor and Russia abstaining. It seeks to end hostilities and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Faki emphasized the renewed hope for diplomacy and a political settlement, urging for immediate and unconditional adherence to the resolution by both parties.
Faki highlighted that a cessation of hostilities would alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people and enable the release of hostages and prisoners held by both sides. He reaffirmed the AU’s support for a two-state solution, where Israelis and Palestinians can coexist peacefully within secure and recognized borders.
The AU’s commitment aligns with international law and relevant AU and UN resolutions, seeking a durable peace in the region.
