Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt Reach Divorce Settlement After Eight-Year Legal Battle

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have reached a divorce settlement, ending an eight-year legal dispute, according to Jolie’s lawyer.

The couple, who married in 2014 and share six children, were one of Hollywood’s most high-profile pairs, often referred to as “Brangelina.” Jolie filed for divorce in 2016, citing “irreconcilable differences.” During the proceedings, allegations surfaced that Pitt had been abusive toward Jolie and two of their children during a 2016 flight, though he was never charged following a police investigation and has denied the claims.

Jolie’s lawyer, James Simon, confirmed the settlement in a statement to People magazine, noting that his client had been focused on “finding peace and healing for their family” since the divorce process began. “This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over,” Simon said.

The terms of the settlement have not been disclosed. While both Jolie and Pitt had previously indicated a desire to keep the divorce proceedings private, the case has been marked by acrimony, with both sides making public accusations. Jolie has accused Pitt of waging a “vindictive war,” while Pitt has alleged that Jolie sought to damage his business ventures.

One major unresolved issue between the ex-couple remains their legal battle over the French estate, Chateau Miraval, a vineyard they purchased together in 2008. In 2022, Pitt accused Jolie of selling her stake in the property to Russian oligarch Yuri Shefler without his knowledge, allegedly to harm his wine investment. It was during those legal proceedings that Jolie first accused Pitt of abuse, claiming he had physically and emotionally assaulted her and two of their children during a 2016 plane incident.

Pitt denied the abuse allegations, and in 2021, he was awarded joint custody of their children after a lengthy court battle. However, in June 2024, their daughter, Shiloh, petitioned a Los Angeles court to remove Pitt from her last name, becoming Shiloh Jolie. Two other children have reportedly stopped using Pitt’s surname.

When they first married, Pitt and Jolie were among the most lucrative and iconic names in Hollywood, with an estimated combined net worth of $400 million. They met in 2005 while filming Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and their relationship quickly garnered global media attention.

This was Pitt’s second marriage, following his split from actress Jennifer Aniston, and Jolie’s third, after marriages to actors Billy Bob Thornton and Jonny Lee Miller.

Jolie’s film credits include Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Changeling, and Girl, Interrupted, while Pitt’s notable roles include Fight Club, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Twelve Monkeys. He is currently filming F1, a movie about Formula One racing in which he stars as veteran driver Sonny Hayes.
