Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan, famous for his 2013 hit “Type of Way,” has died at the age of 33, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Quan, whose real name was Dequantes Devontay Lamar, passed away Thursday at Grady Memorial Hospital, said Jimmy Sadler, senior medical examiner investigator with the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Quan was influential in bringing Atlanta’s trap hip-hop sound to mainstream audiences. He gained prominence alongside artists like Young Thug, known for his melodic rap style. His 2013 single “Type of Way” and 2014’s “Lifestyle,” a collaboration with Young Thug and Birdman under the group name Rich Gang, were significant in launching both his and Young Thug’s careers. “Lifestyle” achieved platinum status in the U.S.
In 2015, Quan released “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh),” which became one of his highest-charting songs. The track’s music video popularized the dance move that inspired the phrase “Hit the Quan,” particularly on the now-defunct Vine platform.
Quan was slated to perform at Nick Cannon’s Wild ‘N Out Live: The Final Lap tour in Atlanta later this month, alongside Waka Flocka, Nardo Wick, and Boosie.
Following the news, rapper Meek Mill, who worked with Quan on a remix of “Type of Way,” paid tribute on Instagram: “RIP Rich Homie Quan. Prayers to his family.”
Rapper 2Chainz, who recently collaborated with Quan on the track “Ah’chi,” shared on Instagram that they had been discussing plans for a music video together.
In a July interview with Revolt, Quan reflected on his legacy: “Remember me as an original. As (an) artist who did it his way,” he said. “Remember me as a hard kid from Atlanta with a dream, who believed in himself and bettered himself — and won.”
