Botswana has officially introduced its latest innovation in electric transportation, the Electric Boat (eBoat), marking a significant step in the country’s commitment to e-mobility. This initiative is part of a series of green transport products recently unveiled by the government, as noted by President Mokgweetsi Masisi in a speech delivered by Vice President Slumber Tsogwane on October 27.
“We stand at the forefront of a pivotal moment in our journey toward a greener, more sustainable transportation future,” Tsogwane said during the launch ceremony in Kasane, a resort township in northwestern Botswana. He acknowledged that while the steps may seem small, they align with the goals of the country’s Energy Transition Strategy, which aims to increase the use of renewable energy across various sectors.
The e-mobility initiative is seen as a crucial response to environmental challenges such as climate change, pollution, and the depletion of natural resources. Tsogwane highlighted that petroleum-powered transportation contributes to pollution in waterways and worsens climate-related issues.
“In Botswana, we have not been spared, as our rivers and ecosystems continue to suffer from these life-threatening developments,” Tsogwane said, emphasizing the need to transition to cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable modes of transport.
Earlier this month, Botswana unveiled its first locally assembled electric vehicles in Gaborone, the capital, with support from two Chinese vehicle manufacturing companies. These electric sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and buses are expected to hit local roads soon, as the government works to generate interest in e-mobility solutions.
