Rwanda’s rising star, Christiane Bukuru, better known as Boukuru, took the stage at Norrsken Kigali on September 6 to launch her debut album, Gikundiro. The event saw the talented singer deliver an unforgettable live performance that captivated the crowd with her powerful voice and heartfelt lyrics
The energy in the room was undeniable, with every attendee fully immersed in the music from the moment Boukuru stepped on stage. Among the notable faces in the crowd were former Miss Rwanda winners Naomi Nishimwe (2020), Meghan Nimwiza (2019), and Liliane Iradukunda (2018), as well as members of the first cohort of Art-Rwanda Ubuhanzi, where Boukuru made her mark.
The evening kicked off with performances from several prominent Rwandan artists, including Peace Jolis, who impressed the audience with his live vocals before being joined by Impakanizi. Soon after, the spotlight shifted to Boukuru, the star of the night.
Boukuru opened her set with Gikundiro, the title track of her album, produced by Michael Makembe. She continued to mesmerize the crowd with songs like Ndagukunda, Umwali, Rest, and Wintoteza. Her soulful voice and emotional storytelling established a deep connection with the audience, making each song feel intimate and personal.
Taking a brief break, Alyn Sano stepped in with her own set, delivering performances that added a unique flavor to the night. However, the excitement grew when Boukuru returned to the stage in a stunning blue dress, continuing to perform hits from her album.
The duo’s combined performances kept the audience dancing and singing along throughout the night. Despite the modest crowd, the enthusiasm and energy from the fans made the launch feel larger than life. Songs like Ndakubona and Umva Iyi Nganzo had the audience cheering and swaying along to the Afrobeat and classical fusion that resonated through the venue.
“The energy was undeniable. Boukuru’s music brought us all together. I’m adding all her songs to my playlist because they’re so calming,” said a fan in attendance.
By the end of the night, Boukuru had firmly established her place in Rwanda’s music scene. Her debut album Gikundiro, now available on all major streaming platforms, is expected to reach audiences far beyond Rwanda.
As she wrapped up her final song, the crowd erupted in applause, signaling the start of what promises to be a bright future for this talented singer.
