Confiance Munyaneza: Campaign Trails, Music, and Life with Vitiligo

The stage lights glinted off the beaming smiles of tens of thousands at Amahoro Stadium as Confy stepped onto the platform, his voice filling the air with a powerful energy that electrified the audience. It was August 11, and Confy, whose real name is Confiance Munyaneza, was performing at the inauguration of President Paul Kagame—a momentous occasion not only for Rwanda but also for the 25-year-old singer. This performance marked a high point in his burgeoning career, a moment he describes as “unforgettable” and “humbling.”

Confy is among the new wave of Rwandan artists who have played an instrumental role in the country’s political landscape through music. This year’s presidential campaign saw songs like “Azabatsinda Kagame” and “Ogera” become anthems, rallying citizens to the polls and infusing the campaign with a sense of unity and celebration. Confy’s contribution, particularly with his performances in Karongi, Kicukiro, Kayonza, and Nyamasheke, helped energize crowds and spread the message of hope and continuity.

For Confy, the journey to these performances was more than just about music; it was about making history. Touring the country, performing in front of thousands, and meeting high-ranking officials—all while building a legacy he hadn’t imagined possible just a few years earlier—has profoundly impacted his life.

“I was so excited, and it built a huge legacy for me, something I didn’t expect. Confy reflects. To be considered one of the influencers in the next five years is incredible. I’ve met several high ranked officials, many of whom are new, in addition to my existing fans. It’s truly an honor to participate in such a significant government activity. This is another achievement to add to my record,” He said.

“Musically, he continued, it has opened many doors and significantly propelled me to greater heights, with many gigs to come. I was not used to performing in front of such a large audience, but I’ve learned a lot, including how to speak to a diverse crowd and other stage experiences. This was definitely a huge opportunity, and it has greatly boosted my visibility.”

But as Confy’s star rose on the political stage, another, more personal battle was unfolding—one that he would soon share with the world. The vibrant performer, known for his energetic hits like “Jowana” and “Pole Pole,” began experiencing changes in his skin. What started as a few discolored patches soon became a pronounced condition, one he later learned was vitiligo.

Vitiligo is a condition that causes the loss of skin pigment in patches, affecting people of all skin types but often more visible in those with darker skin. While it’s not life-threatening, vitiligo can be a deeply personal and emotional challenge, particularly for someone in the public eye.

Confy, however, chose to face it head-on. In a courageous move, he opened up about his condition on social media, sharing his journey with fans and fellow artists alike. The response was overwhelming, with an outpouring of support that bolstered his spirit.

“Accepting it was not easy,” Confy admits. “But I want people with the same situation to join my journey of self-love and acceptance. This condition has taught me so much about resilience, and it has only strengthened my resolve to succeed.”

In the face of adversity, Confy’s music has taken on new depths. His recent EP, Ability, reflects his personal growth and newfound perspective. The album is an exploration of strength, both physical and emotional, and a testament to his belief that one can thrive despite life’s challenges.

“Vitiligo can increase or decrease depending on the season and other factors. In my case, it appeared and hasn’t gone away, so I accepted it and decided to embrace my skin color,” Confy says, his voice steady with determination. “I’ve learned that the more you accept yourself, the stronger you become. I don’t let negative opinions get to me because this is my life, and I’m living it on my terms.”

Confy’s openness about his condition has also brought attention to the importance of sun protection. He regularly uses sunscreen to manage the effects of sun exposure, along with other treatments to help his skin. Through his own experiences, he hopes to raise awareness and encourage others dealing with vitiligo to embrace their unique beauty.

As Confy continues to make waves in the Rwandan music scene, his story is a reminder that true artistry comes from embracing every aspect of one’s life—the triumphs and the challenges alike. His journey is far from over, but with each performance and every song, he’s carving out a place for himself not just as a musician, but as a symbol of resilience and self-acceptance.

And so, with the release of Ability and a career that’s only just beginning to soar, Confy projects hope and inspiration. Whether on stage or off, his message is clear: no matter the battles you face, your story is yours to own—and you have the power to make it extraordinary.
