Delegates at the UN General Assembly, including foreign ministers from Indonesia, Denmark, and Trinidad and Tobago, are calling for an end to hostilities in the Middle East.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated, “Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced across the region, and there is a very real risk of an all-out regional war that would affect not only the people in the region, but all of us. This must end, and it must end now.”
Trinidad and Tobago’s foreign minister expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict, stating he is “deeply troubled by the escalation of conflict and tensions in the Middle East.” He also noted distress over the ongoing war in Gaza and the daily flashpoints of violence.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has repeatedly called for an end to the violence, warning that the world cannot afford to see Lebanon “become another Gaza.”
These comments come amid a significant escalation in fighting between Israel and Hezbollah over the past week, which has included Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon that have resulted in hundreds of casualties.
A recent airstrike in Beirut killed Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah. Iran’s Supreme Leader has vowed retaliation for his death.
