Theogene Nshimiyimana, widely known in Rwanda’s music scene as DJ Theo, died Tuesday at Masaka Hospital following a prolonged battle with illness. He was 41.
Born on Dec. 22, 1983, Theo was the only child in his family. He passed away hours after being transferred to Masaka Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for typhoid. His condition deteriorated over time, leading to the loss of speech and hearing and requiring oxygen support.
According to fellow musician and close friend Mico The Best, doctors later diagnosed Theo with diabetes and stomach issues, further complicating his health.
DJ Theo was a prominent figure in Rwanda’s entertainment industry, known for his work as a DJ, artist manager, and event promoter. Over his career, he collaborated with various artists, mentored aspiring DJs, and contributed significantly to the growth of the country’s music community. He was closely associated with Ibisumizi Records, led by artist RiderMan.
Theo’s passing marks a significant loss to the Rwandan music scene, leaving behind a legacy of mentorship and dedication to the industry.
