Engen Closes Three Petrol Stations in Kigali Over Wetland Concerns

Engen has permanently closed three of its petrol stations in Kigali—Engen Gitikinyoni 1, Engen Gitikinyoni 2, and Engen Poids Lourds—effective January 13, 2025, the company announced on Sunday.

The closure is part of a broader effort by the government to protect wetland areas, as the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) confirmed that the stations were operating in designated wetlands. The move is in line with a government initiative to restore and safeguard vital ecosystems.

In total, 19 petrol stations in wetland zones are set to cease operations by January 15, 2025. Some stations have already shut down, while others are in the process of closure.

RURA Director General Evariste Rugigana assured the public that there would be no fuel shortages, emphasizing that upgraded petrol stations in nearby areas would be able to handle the demand without disruption.

“We are going to ensure service continuity because there are other petrol stations in the vicinity that have been upgraded and have sufficient capacity to meet demand,” Rugigana said.

He added that the remaining stations in Kigali are designed to accommodate traffic and prevent any service interruptions.
