Ethiopian athletes dominated the Berlin Marathon on Sunday, with Milkesa Mengesha winning the men’s race in a personal best time of just over 2 hours, 3 minutes. He was joined on the podium by compatriot Haymanot Alew, who narrowly missed second place, finishing behind Kenya’s Cybrian Kotut.
In the women’s category, Tigist Ketema claimed victory with a time of 2 hours, 16 minutes, and 42 seconds. Ethiopian runners Mestawut Fikir and Bosena Mulatie secured second and third places, respectively.
This year’s marathon marked the first edition without the participation of Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge or Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele, both of whom have competed since 2014.
More than 58,000 runners from 161 nations took part in the event, setting a record for the number of athletes.
