Exploring Rwanda’s Five Volcano Mountains

Nestled in the northern province of Rwanda, the Musanze district is home to the breathtaking Volcanoes National Park. This park is not only famous for its endangered mountain gorillas but also for its five magnificent volcano mountains.

Volcanoes National Park boasts a rich biodiversity, combining verdant and montane ecosystems with bamboo and alpine forests. The landscape features grasslands, mist-covered rainforests, and the steep slopes of five dormant volcanoes, part of the eight that make up the Virunga ranges.

The Majestic Five

Mount Muhabura

Standing tall at 4,127 meters, Mount Muhabura is the third highest mountain in the Virunga chain. Hikers can embark on an adventure from either the Rwandan or Ugandan side, promising an unforgettable experience.

Mount Sabyinyo

At 3,669 meters, Mount Sabyinyo is the oldest volcano in the range. It marks the borders between Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda, and connects three national parks renowned for their mountain gorillas: Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Mgahinga National Park in Uganda, and Virunga National Park in the DRC.

Mount Karisimbi

The highest peak in Rwanda, Mount Karisimbi rises to 4,507 meters. This dormant stratovolcano, also the highest in the Virunga range, offers a two-day hiking experience with stunning views and encounters with diverse flora and fauna. Hikers often spend the first night at a base camp at 3,700 meters before reaching the summit on the second day.

Mount Bisoke

Famous for its crater lake, Mount Bisoke stands at 3,711 meters on the Rwanda-DRC border. The hike to Bisoke’s summit is less strenuous, making it accessible to most tourists, even those with little hiking experience. The one-day trek offers scenic views and wildlife encounters, including various bird species and monkeys.

Mount Gahinga

Mount Gahinga, at 3,473 meters, straddles the border between Rwanda and Uganda. It lies between Mount Muhabura and Mount Sabyinyo and gives its name to Uganda’s Mgahinga National Park.
