Former Mauritian Prime Minister Released on Bail After Money Laundering Arrest

Former Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth was released on bail after his arrest Sunday on money laundering charges, officials said.

Jugnauth was taken into custody following searches conducted by detectives from the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) at multiple locations, including his residence.

As part of his bail conditions, Jugnauth is prohibited from discussing the case with the public or the media and is barred from interfering with any witness or potential witness, directly or indirectly.

His lawyer said Sunday that Jugnauth had been provisionally charged and denied the allegations.

Jugnauth served as prime minister from 2017 until November, when his Militant Socialist Movement suffered a significant defeat in the general elections. After the vote, newly elected Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam announced a public finances audit.

Last month, the country’s former central bank governor was also detained and released on bail after being charged with conspiracy to commit fraud.

The investigation into Jugnauth comes as part of broader efforts to address alleged financial irregularities in Mauritius, a nation often regarded as a stable democracy in the Indian Ocean region.
