Ian Gelder, renowned for his portrayal of Kevan Lannister in the hit series “Game of Thrones,” has passed away at the age of 74, as confirmed by his husband and fellow actor Ben Daniels on Tuesday.
In an emotional Instagram post, Daniels expressed profound sorrow over Gelder’s death, revealing that Gelder had been battling bile duct cancer since December. Despite Daniels’ dedicated care, Gelder’s decline happened unexpectedly fast.
Describing Gelder as the epitome of kindness and generosity, Daniels paid tribute to his beloved partner of 30 years, highlighting Gelder’s unwavering support as his “rock.”
Gelder’s illustrious career spanned decades, encompassing notable roles in television series such as “Torchwood,” “His Dark Materials,” and “Doctor Who.” However, it was his portrayal of Kevan Lannister in “Game of Thrones” that brought him widespread recognition, appearing in four of the show’s eight seasons.
Beyond the screen, Gelder was a revered stage actor, gracing productions at the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) with performances in classics like “The Merchant of Venice” and “Richard III.”
News of Gelder’s passing prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and fans alike. Richard E Grant, co-star of “Withnail & I,” conveyed condolences to Daniels, while the RSC remembered Gelder as one of the industry’s kindest souls. “Doctor Who” showrunner Russell T.
