Guardians of the Future: The Inspiring Journey of Cosmas Anakwue

In the African Environment, Health, Safety, and Sustainability (EHSS) space, few names shine as brightly as Nigeria’s Cosmas Anakwue. With over 16 years of dedicated service across various industries, Cosmas’s career is a testament to his commitment to creating safer workplaces, protecting the environment, and fostering community development. From his humble beginnings to his current influential roles, his journey is a powerful narrative of passion, resilience, and leadership.

The Genesis of a Safety Advocate

Cosmas Anakwue’s career began in 2009, following his graduation from Namdiaziki University in 2008. His initial foray into the professional world was through the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), where he joined the renowned pharmaceutical manufacturing company, Glasgow SmithKline (GSK).

“I started my career in 2009 after graduating from university in 2008. During my NYSC, I joined GSK, a pharmaceutical manufacturing company, and that’s where my safety career started,” Cosmas recalls. “I found joy in protecting the environment and the health and safety of workers.”

This early experience set the foundation for his lifelong dedication to EHSS. After his stint at GSK, Cosmas’s career trajectory took him to a global haulage company in Lagos and later to Big Cola, one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing beverage companies.

Rising Through the Ranks

At Big Cola, Cosmas’s expertise and leadership skills came to the fore. Joining the company as a safety manager in 2014, he played a pivotal role in its growth and success.

“I joined Big Cola as a safety manager, starting with construction. We captured 30% of the market share and completed the project without any major accidents. It was a proud moment to witness the first bottle of Big Cola come off the production line,” he shares.

His achievements at Big Cola were just the beginning. Cosmas went on to work with Parfeti Varmela before moving to Rwanda in 2022 to join Africa Improved Foods. Here, he not only continued his EHSS work but also expanded his role to include corporate social responsibility, integrating environmental, social, and governance principles.

Throughout his career, Cosmas has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to excellence and care. His certification as a HAZOP Black Belt Chair and his role in significantly reducing accident rates at Africa Improved Foods are just a few examples of his dedication.

“From 2022 till date, I’ve enjoyed my career at Africa Improved Foods. I’ve also taken steps to further my skills in process safety management. The attachment I have with my career is the element of care – care for people, the environment, and the future.”

Empowering the Next Generation

Beyond his professional achievements, Cosmas is also a passionate advocate for youth empowerment. In Rwanda, he has become a patron for young African footballers, creating a diaspora football team to provide opportunities for aspiring athletes from various backgrounds.

“I formed a diaspora football team here in Rwanda. It’s not just a club; it’s a team where Nigerians, Cameroonians, other West Africans, and even Rwandans, who are still awaiting their big break, can come together,” Cosmas explains. “The idea is to give these young athletes a chance to be recognized. By playing together, they not only improve their skills but also learn the values of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.”

Cosmas’s journey has not been without challenges. From addressing domestic safety issues to tackling complex problems in manufacturing, his role requires constant vigilance and problem-solving.

“As a safety, health, and environment professional, there are always challenges. But every problem comes with solutions. Whether it’s domestic safety, road safety, or marine safety, I identify the gaps and provide solutions,” he says.

Among his many achievements, Cosmas is particularly proud of his work with Aje Group, Big Cola, and Africa Improved Foods. At Big Cola, he managed the construction of the factory, ensuring it was completed without major accidents. In Rwanda, his efforts have led to a 70% reduction in accident rates and significant improvements in safety practices.

Looking to the Future

As Cosmas looks to the future, his vision remains clear. He aims to continue contributing his expertise to global environmental issues and fostering sustainable development.

“In five years, I might find myself in North America or Europe, contributing my quota to protecting the environment. The goal is to make the environment sustainable for future generations,” he states.

Cosmas Anakwu’s journey is a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can make. His dedication to EHSS, combined with his passion for community development, sets a high standard for what it means to be a true leader.

“Every step I’ve taken in my career and my non-profit work is driven by the belief that we can create a better, safer, and more sustainable world. It’s about leaving a legacy that others can build upon,” he reflects.

Cosmas Anakwu’s story is far from over. As he continues to inspire through his professional achievements and non-profit endeavors, we are reminded that each of us has the potential to make a lasting impact. By caring for our world and each other, we can create ripples of positive change that touch lives far and wide.
