United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres outlined his key priorities for 2025 on Tuesday, emphasizing the urgent need to address four critical global challenges: ongoing conflicts, escalating inequalities, the climate crisis, and the unchecked rise of artificial intelligence.
In his address, Guterres highlighted the growing toll of armed conflicts, with particular focus on Gaza, where a ceasefire is set to take effect, as well as ongoing crises in Lebanon, Ukraine, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Haiti. He stressed that resolving these conflicts must be the UN’s top priority.
Guterres also called attention to the growing inequalities around the world, pointing out the lack of progress in meeting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. With just five years remaining until the 2030 deadline, he warned that $4 trillion is still needed to fulfill commitments to these global objectives.
The UN chief did not shy away from addressing the climate crisis, urging nations to take bold action. He called for a 60% reduction in global carbon emissions by 2035, along with a significant cut in fossil fuel production. “The time to act is now,” Guterres said, as the world continues to grapple with rising temperatures and environmental degradation.
Finally, Guterres expressed concern over the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, warning that its unchecked development could pose serious risks to humanity. He urged the international community to ensure that AI is used to promote equality, human dignity, and social good, rather than exacerbating existing societal divisions.
His remarks come as the UN faces increasing pressure to lead efforts to address these global challenges, with the world at a crossroads on issues of peace, justice, and sustainability.
