Iga Swiatek Accepts One-Month Suspension After Testing Positive for Banned Substance

Tennis champion Iga Swiatek has accepted a one-month suspension after testing positive for TMZ, a banned heart medication, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced Thursday, Nov. 28.

The five-time Grand Slam winner failed an out-of-competition drug test in August. The ITIA accepted Swiatek’s explanation that the positive result was unintentional and caused by contamination from a nonprescription melatonin supplement she had been taking to address jet lag and sleep issues.

Swiatek, 23, shared a video on her Instagram account, expressing how difficult the investigation period had been for her, as it prevented her from defending her ranking and competing in tournaments in Asia. She thanked her supporters and expressed relief at the prospect of returning to the court soon.
