Olympic boxing gold medalist Imane Khelif has filed a legal complaint in France following reports that she has XY chromosomes, which surfaced earlier this week. The 25-year-old athlete, who represents Algeria, is seeking legal action after facing online harassment tied to the claims.
Khelif had previously lodged a complaint with French authorities regarding the abuse she endured during the Paris 2024 Olympics. The harassment, which intensified following her appearance at the Games, has drawn widespread condemnation.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) expressed its dismay over the situation, calling the harassment “saddening” in a statement. The IOC also emphasized that all athletes competing in the boxing tournament at the Paris Olympics, including Khelif, met the competition’s eligibility and medical regulations set by the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit.
Khelif, who also competed in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, has become the subject of intense scrutiny following her success in Paris, with some media outlets making unfounded claims about her gender.
