Internet Disruption Hits West and Central Africa

West and Central Africa experienced a major internet disruption on Thursday, according to the internet observatory Netblocks. The disruption was reportedly caused by multiple subsea cable failures, with the cause of the failures still unclear.

Ivory Coast faced a severe outage, while Liberia, Benin, Ghana, and Burkina Faso saw a high impact on their internet connectivity, Netblocks data indicated.

Internet firm Cloudflare also reported ongoing major disruptions in Gambia, Guinea, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Benin, and Niger. “There seems to be a pattern in the timing of the disruptions, impacting from the north to the south of Africa,” Cloudflare Radar stated.

South African telecoms operator Vodacom attributed connectivity issues in the region to the undersea cable failures, affecting the country’s network providers.
