Rwandan President Paul Kagame extended his condolences to King Mohammed VI of Morocco on Sunday following the death of his mother, Princess Lalla Latifa. Lalla Latifa, widow of King Hassan II, passed away at the age of 78.
“On behalf of the people of Rwanda and myself, I send deepest condolences to His Majesty King Mohammed VI on the passing of his mother, Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Latifa,” Kagame wrote in a statement.
“Rwanda stands with the Royal Family and the people of the Kingdom of Morocco during this difficult time.”
Born in 1946 in Khenifra, Morocco, Lalla Latifa, affectionately known as the Mother of the Royal Children, belonged to the Amahzoune family of the Zayane tribe. Her marriage to King Hassan II yielded five children: Princess Lalla Meryem, King Mohammed VI, Princess Lalla Asma, Princess Lalla Hasna, and Prince Moulay Rachid.
Lalla Latifa lived a private life and did not hold any public role. After spending much of her later years in France, she settled permanently in Marrakesh in 2019.
