President Paul Kagame reappointed Edouard Ngirente as Rwanda’s Prime Minister on Tuesday, August 13. Ngirente, 51, has held the position since August 2017, becoming the sixth Prime Minister in post-genocide Rwanda.
Before his 2017 appointment, Ngirente worked with the World Bank Group in Washington, D.C., where he served as an Advisor and later as a Senior Advisor to the Executive Director responsible for 20 African countries. Prior to his tenure at the World Bank, Ngirente held senior roles in Rwanda’s Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning.
Ngirente holds a PhD in Agricultural Economics from the Catholic University of Louvain (UCL) in Belgium, along with postgraduate degrees in Financial Risk Management from Facultés Universitaires Saint-Louis of Brussels and Agricultural Economics from UCL. He completed his undergraduate studies at the National University of Rwanda (now the University of Rwanda), where he later served as a faculty member.
Born in Gakenke District, Northern Province, Ngirente has played a significant role in coordinating government action and overseeing the implementation of national policies and programs as Prime Minister. The Office of the Prime Minister is responsible for coordinating national policies and development programs, monitoring and evaluating their implementation, and overseeing the functioning of government institutions.
