China’s top official, Li Xi, arrived in Kenya’s capital on Monday for bilateral talks, where he was welcomed by President William Ruto at State House Nairobi.
During the meeting, Ruto expressed Kenya’s commitment to strengthening ties with China, emphasizing their growing partnership on development projects. “Kenya is dedicated to advancing this relationship across Africa and upholding the ‘One China’ policy,” Ruto said.
The discussions also focused on Kenya’s bid to join the BRICS group of emerging economies. Ruto formally requested China’s support for the country’s inclusion in the bloc, which currently represents approximately 28% of the global economy.
Founded in 2006 with members Brazil, Russia, India, and China, BRICS expanded in 2010 to include South Africa. More recently, countries such as Egypt and Ethiopia were added to the group earlier this year.
