In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Kenyan driver Karan Patel and his navigator Tauseef Khan claimed victory in the 42nd edition of the Africa Rally Championship (ARC). The event, held at Sao Hill Mafinga in Iringa last weekend, saw Patel and Khan outperforming six other drivers to secure the coveted title.
With each passing stage in Tanzania, Patel, driving a Hyundai, steadily improved his performance and adapted to the challenging terrain. Ultimately, he amassed an impressive total of 144 points, securing a narrow win over Ugandan driver Mangat, who collected 141 points. Yasin Nasser, also from Uganda, secured third place with 114 points.
The victory marks Patel’s ninth triumph for a Kenyan driver since the ARC’s inception in 1981. Notably, Patel’s achievement also brings the title back to Kenya after Zambian driver Leeroy Gomes and navigator Urshlla Gomes emerged as victors in the previous edition.
Expressing his elation, Patel acknowledged the fierce competition and the need for strategic planning. “I faced strong opposition from other drivers. I had my plan, and despite not winning Tanzania’s edition, I am now celebrating this victory,” stated Patel.
Navigator Tauseef Khan, who became the fifth Kenyan to win the title, emphasized the importance of their strategic approach. The team had previously secured victories in Rwanda, Kenya, Burundi, and Zambia, establishing a strong winning streak at ARC events.
Patel’s win also marks a milestone for the Ford marque, as he became the first Kenyan duo to achieve such a feat in a Ford vehicle. He joins a list of esteemed Kenyan rally drivers, including Shekhar Mehta, David Horsey, Jaspreet Singh Chatthe, Don Smith, Manvir Baryan, and Carl Tundo.
The Africa Rally Championship has been a platform for showcasing the exceptional driving skills and determination of rally enthusiasts from various African nations. This tradition continues to foster a competitive spirit among drivers, making each edition a highly anticipated event.
