Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim labeled his team the “worst in the club’s history” following a humbling 3-1 loss to Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The defeat marked United’s 10th loss of the season, leaving the team languishing in 13th place in the Premier League standings and closer to the relegation zone than the top of the table.
“Imagine what this is like for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is like for me,” Amorim said in a candid post-match press conference. “We are being the worst team, maybe, in the history of Manchester United. We have to acknowledge that to change it.”
Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag in November, has overseen a challenging run since taking charge. Under his leadership, the Red Devils have earned just 11 points from a possible 33 in the league, putting them on track for their worst-ever Premier League finish. The current low mark is last season’s eighth-place finish.
Despite the struggles, Amorim remains committed to his approach, which he introduced after joining from Sporting Clube de Portugal. The Portuguese manager acknowledged that the players have yet to fully adapt to his system but insisted he would not deviate from his philosophy.
“I’m not going to change how I see the game. The players are going to suffer, the fans are going to suffer, and I’m sorry,” Amorim said. “But I know we can succeed. We just need to survive this moment.”
United’s inconsistency has frustrated fans. While the team has secured impressive results, including a 2-1 victory over rival Manchester City and a 2-2 draw with league leader Liverpool, it has also suffered losses to lower-ranked teams like Bournemouth, Wolves, and Newcastle.
The team’s current struggles evoke comparisons to the 1989-90 season when United also lost 10 of its first 22 league games. At the time, a young Alex Ferguson was in charge, a manager who would later go on to win 13 league titles with the club.
United will look to bounce back on Thursday when it faces Rangers in the Europa League, followed by a Premier League clash with Fulham on Sunday.
