Milestone Promotions for Women in Rwandan Military

Seven women have achieved the historic feat of being promoted to the rank of full Colonel, in the Rwandan Armed Forces; marking the first time in Rwandan history that women have attained such high military ranks.

The distinguished women officers include Colonels Betty Dukuze (RDF General Headquarters), Belina Kayirangwa (RDF Headquarters – J3), Seraphine Nyirasafari (Ministry of Defence), Marie Claire Muragijimana (Engineer Brigade), Lydia D. Bagwaneza (Republican Guard), Lausanne N. Ingabire (RDF Command and Staff College – Musanze District), and Stella Uwineza (Airforce).

The promotions not only underscore the commitment of the Rwanda Defence Force to recognizing and rewarding merit but also showcase a historic stride towards gender equality within the military ranks. The elevation of seven women to the rank of full Colonel is a testament to the growing role and contribution of women in Rwanda’s armed forces, breaking barriers and inspiring future generations.

In addition to this significant achievement for women, a total of 17 officers were promoted from the rank of Colonel to Brigadier General. The newly appointed Brigadier Generals are Bertin Mukasa Cyubahiro, Jean Paul Bitega, Nelson Rwigema, Albert Rugambwa, Deo Rusanganwa, Jean Paul Karangwa, Cooper Mike Mujuni, David B Ngarambe, Franco Rutagengwa, Theodomire Bahizi, Celestin Kanyamahanga, Adolphe Simbizi, Jean Paul Nyirubutama, Jules Rwirangira, Faustin Tinka, Jean Chrysostome Ngendahimana, and Frédéric Itangayenda.

A total of 83 Lieutenant Colonels of the Rwanda Defence Force were also promoted to the rank of Colonel, reflecting a comprehensive advancement within the military hierarchy.

Furthermore, 98 individuals were promoted from the rank of Major to Lieutenant Colonel, while 295 Captains ascended to the rank of Major. Additionally, four Lieutenants were promoted to the rank of Captain, and 226 Non-Commissioned Officers were elevated to Second Lieutenant.
