Mozambique has unveiled a new plan to strengthen its early warning system for extreme weather events as part of a global initiative to protect communities from climate-related hazards.
At a ceremony in the capital, President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi announced the country’s roadmap to achieve “Early Warnings for All” by the end of 2027. The plan includes a $7.8 million investment to improve weather and climate observation networks.
“Mozambique faces frequent disasters such as floods, cyclones, and droughts, exacerbated by climate change,” Nyusi said. “Advance notice is essential for protecting lives and reducing damage.”
The Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF) will fund the installation of new weather stations and upgrades to existing ones, aiming to meet international standards. The investment follows recent severe cyclones that caused significant damage and loss of life.
The initiative, supported by the UN and other partners, is expected to enhance Mozambique’s weather forecasting and disaster preparedness.
