Nigeria Joins BRICS as Ninth Partner Country

Brazil’s government announced on Friday that Nigeria has been accepted as a partner country in the BRICS group, expanding the alliance of emerging market economies.

As Africa’s largest economy, Nigeria now joins Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan as part of BRICS’ growing network. The group represents over half of the world’s population and more than 45% of global GDP, underscoring its increasing influence on the international stage.

Brazil, which currently holds the rotating presidency of BRICS, highlighted Nigeria’s converging interests with other member countries, emphasizing its active role in strengthening cooperation within the Global South and reforming global governance—goals shared by Brazil.

Nigeria, one of the world’s top oil producers, brings significant economic weight to the alliance, further boosting BRICS’ global standing.

While Nigeria’s partnership status allows it to attend BRICS meetings and events, it does not grant full membership rights, such as voting privileges.
