Nigerians Protest Telecom Data Price Hikes Amid Economic Struggles

Nigerians are expressing outrage over significant increases in mobile data prices by telecom giants MTN and Airtel, saying the move worsens an already challenging economic situation. MTN, the country’s largest network provider, tripled the price of its 15GB weekly data bundle from 2,000 naira ($1.33) to 6,000 naira ($3.99), while Airtel also raised its tariffs substantially. The abrupt price hikes have sparked widespread backlash, with many customers accusing the companies of exacerbating financial hardships.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently approved a tariff adjustment but capped increases at 50%. Some of the new prices appear to exceed that limit. Neither the NCC nor Airtel has responded to public complaints. MTN defended the decision, stating on X (formerly Twitter) that the adjustments were necessary to maintain service quality. “We apologize for any inconvenience caused,” the company said. However, customers took to social media to express their frustration. “Triple the amount? The end time is near,” one user posted. Another called the increase “outrageous.”

The data price hike is expected to affect small businesses and entrepreneurs who rely on affordable internet access. “The economy is already in a bad state,” said digital creator Mubarak Uniquepikin. “For many young people, buying data is already difficult. This increase will only make it harder for them to survive.” Nigeria’s economy has faced increasing pressure in recent years, with inflation at record highs. The removal of fuel subsidies and a recent currency devaluation under President Bola Tinubu’s administration were intended to stabilize the economy but have left many struggling.

Globacom, Nigeria’s third-largest telecom provider, has not raised its data prices, providing some relief for its customers. Meanwhile, Nigerians await a response from the NCC regarding the price hikes and whether regulatory intervention will follow.
