Prem League Praises AFCON VAR Officiating

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has lauded the level of officiating at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, reserving praise for those responsible in the Video Assistant Referee control rooms.

While VAR divided opinion among pundits and football fans alike since its introduction into the game some eight years ago, the use of VAR at the latest AFCON was met with positive reviews.

With referees and their assistants making big calls accurately throughout the tournament, Neville feels that European football can take a leaf out of the African VAR officials.

“The standards of officiating set by this year’s AFCON are honestly staggering,” Neville said, as per Sports Brief. “It’s like they invented it. The premier league and all of Europe have a lot of learning to do,” he said.
