Public Buses in Kigali to Operate 24/7 Over New Year Period

Public buses in Kigali will operate around the clock starting December 31 through January 5 to accommodate increased travel demand during the New Year period, city officials announced Monday.

“On December 31, 2024, all city transport operators will extend their hours until morning to meet the heightened demand for nighttime travel,” said city spokesperson Emma-Claudine Ntirenganya.

Following December 31, only buses on the Nyabugogo-Kabuga and Downtown-Remera-Kanombe routes will continue operating overnight through January 5. These routes were selected due to the high volume of passengers and their key role in connecting major areas of the city, Ntirenganya explained.

“These routes offer convenient connectivity and make it easier for passengers to access buses at various locations. Commuters are encouraged to use these services for safe transportation during late hours,” she added.

If demand increases, additional buses may be deployed to ensure sufficient coverage, Ntirenganya said.

Passengers are reminded to bring their smart cards when boarding, particularly during nighttime hours. However, in the interest of public safety, transport operators have been instructed to assist passengers without smart cards. Mobile money payment systems will also be available as an alternative.

“This initiative is aimed at providing safe and reliable transportation during the festive season, especially for those celebrating the end of the year and the start of the New Year,” Ntirenganya said.
