The 2024 Umurenge Kagame Cup concluded on Sunday, May 5, with Rubengera from Karongi and Murunda from Rutsiro emerging as champions in the men’s and women’s categories respectively.
The annual tournament, jointly organized by the Ministry of Sports, Ministry of Local Government, Rwanda Governance Board (RGB), and various sports federations, serves as a celebration of Rwanda’s people-centric leadership. This year’s event, held at the Umuganda Stadium in Rubavu, engaged athletes across eight disciplines, including football, volleyball, cycling, and Igisoro.
In the men’s final, Rubengera triumphed over Kimonyi with a 2-0 victory, despite an early setback that saw Rubengera reduced to 10 men in the 27th minute. In the women’s final, Murunda secured a 2-0 win against Mahembe.
Minister of Local Government, Jean Claude Musabyimana, commended all participants for their contribution to the tournament’s success, emphasizing its role in celebrating 30 years of good governance that prioritizes citizens.
Usta Kaitesi, CEO of Rwanda Governance Board (RGB), praised Rwanda’s unique approach to governance, highlighting the tournament’s role in promoting both health and happiness among citizens. Looking ahead, Kaitesi promised to make future editions of the Umurenge Kagame Cup even more significant.
One notable moment of the tournament was the recognition of 67-year-old Rosette Mukamutana, who plays for Rulindo’s basketball team, as the Best Combative Player. Mukamutana, the oldest player in the tournament, expressed joy in demonstrating that age is no barrier to sportsmanship and health.
In addition to the football finals, outstanding performances were witnessed across various disciplines. The City of Kigali and Nyaruguru district excelled in athletics, while Kamonyi dominated in basketball.
