Rwanda Confirms Marburg Virus Cases, Boosts Health Precautions

The Ministry of Health has announced the confirmation of Marburg Virus Disease (MVD), a severe hemorrhagic fever, in a few patients across health facilities in the country.

The Ministry stated that investigations are underway to determine the origin of the infection, and contact tracing efforts have been initiated to prevent further transmission.

Enhanced preventive measures have been implemented in all health facilities nationwide to curb the spread of the disease. The Ministry highlighted that Marburg virus infections are transmitted through direct contact with blood and body fluids of infected individuals, particularly those who are visibly ill. The virus is not considered to be airborne.

The Ministry of Health advises anyone experiencing symptoms such as high fever, strong headaches, vomiting, muscle aches, and stomach aches to seek immediate medical attention by calling the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) hotline at 114 or visiting the nearest health facility.

The Ministry is closely monitoring the situation and will provide regular updates as necessary. The public is encouraged to maintain their usual activities while exercising a high level of vigilance and hygiene.
