Rwanda Development Board Eases Nighttime Restrictions

In acknowledgment of the holiday season, the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) has temporarily relaxed nighttime restrictions, with the new guidelines set to be in effect from Friday, December 15, through January 7, 2024.

According to a statement from RDB signed by Chief Executive Francis Gatare, hospitality establishments, including hotels, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs, are permitted to extend their operating hours. From Mondays through Thursdays, these establishments will be allowed to operate until 2 a.m., while they can remain open throughout Fridays, weekends, and public holidays.

The temporary guidelines also extend to private events, as highlighted in the statement. “The end of the year festive season has begun, and the Government of Rwanda wants people to celebrate and enjoy,” the statement reads. “That is why the Rwanda Development Board has set temporary operating hours for the season.”

Despite the relaxation, RDB issued a warning against violations, emphasizing the importance of compliance. “All establishments must abide by noise pollution regulations and be respectful of those who request rest,” the statement said. It added that everyone is expected to regulate themselves, but RDB, in coordination with other relevant government institutions, will ensure the proper implementation of these guidelines. Entities found in violation will be held accountable.

Additionally, RDB emphasized the illegality of serving alcohol to individuals under 18 years of age or to “a visibly intoxicated” person. The statement urged consumers to drink responsibly and emphasized the prohibition of driving under the influence of alcohol.

As the festive season kicks off, these temporary adjustments aim to strike a balance between facilitating celebration and ensuring public safety. RDB encourages the public to enjoy the festivities responsibly and adhere to the outlined guidelines during this period.
