Rwanda Development Board Reassures Public Amid Marburg Virus Concerns

The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) has issued a statement addressing concerns over the Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) in Rwanda. According to the RDB, the Ministry of Health has confirmed the presence of the virus in the country but has assured the public that it is under control, thanks to swift and proactive containment measures.

Despite the outbreak, RDB emphasized that Rwanda remains open for business, tourism, and investment. “Rwanda has responded swiftly and proactively to contain the virus,” the statement reads, highlighting that Marburg, though serious, is not airborne and is transmitted only through direct contact with blood, bodily fluids, or contaminated surfaces of infected individuals.

The RDB has outlined specific guidance for businesses, tourists, event organizers, and investors to maintain safety while ensuring that economic activities continue uninterrupted. For businesses, RDB urges compliance with the Ministry of Health’s hygiene guidelines, which include conducting temperature checks and providing handwashing or sanitizing stations at building entrances.

The RDB has reassured tourists that travel within Rwanda is safe, stating that the health and safety of visitors are a top priority. “Operators, hotels, and other service providers are following strict hygiene protocols, including temperature checks, regular handwashing, and the availability of sanitizing stations,” the statement noted. Given that Marburg is not airborne and does not spread asymptomatically, the likelihood of travel restrictions being enforced is low.

Rwanda will continue to host events safely, according to the RDB. The board has asked event organizers to implement additional hygiene measures and to encourage minimal close contact between attendees to prevent any potential spread of the virus. The statement underlined that these measures are based on scientific evidence and allow for events to continue while ensuring the safety of all participants and staff.

Addressing investors, the RDB highlighted Rwanda’s balanced approach to public health and economic stability. “Rwanda’s evidence-based and effective response to public health challenges demonstrates why Rwanda is a reliable choice for investors,” the statement said.

The RDB remains committed to providing updated information as needed and is available to address any concerns that businesses, tourists, event organizers, and investors may have.
