In a recent cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, Rwanda has announced the appointment of Gen. Patrick Nyamvumba, the former army chief and Minister of Internal Security, as the new High Commissioner to Tanzania. This decision is pending the necessary approvals.
Gen. Nyamvumba, who was born on June 11, 1967, has had an illustrious career, serving as the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) Chief of Defence Staff and Minister of Internal Security from November 2019 to April 2020. His extensive military background includes a tenure as Force Commander of the AU-UN Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) from 2009 to 2013, and various leadership roles within the RDF.
The same cabinet session also resulted in several other key diplomatic appointments. Former Senator Fatou Harerimana has been named High Commissioner to Pakistan, and Benedicto Nshimiyimana, who previously served at the Rwandan embassy in Germany, will now take up the role of Counsellor at the Rwandan embassy in Hungary.
Additionally, the meeting saw the appointment of Teta Gisa Rwigema as the Director General of Africa and Virgile Rwanyagatare, formerly serving in China, as the Director General of Asia, Pacific, and the Middle East at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In another significant appointment, Francis Kamanzi was named the new Chief Executive Officer of the Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board, succeeding Yamina Karitanyi. These appointments are part of Rwanda’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its diplomatic and strategic positions both regionally and globally.
