Rwandan actors are set to take center stage in the upcoming African film Alkebulan: The Garden of Eden, which celebrates the continent’s rich history and culture. Among the standout names from Rwanda are Malaika Uwamahoro, David Murenzi, Jones Kennedy Mazimpaka, Ruth Bahali, and Shandari Kanyoni. These actors will be featured alongside prominent talents from across Africa, showcasing Rwanda’s growing presence in the film industry.
The film, initially titled Africanda, has been renamed to better reflect its focus on telling the stories of black people and celebrating the power of African narratives. Alkebulan: The Garden of Eden will be released as a series of episodes, with the storyline centered on a young college student who travels through time to discover her roots and her future.
The film’s production has brought together a diverse group of African actors, including Zimbabwean singer Jah Prayzah and Tawanda Denga, known for his role in The Signal. Filming took place in Rwanda, Senegal, and Zimbabwe, with the support of the Visit Rwanda campaign, further highlighting Rwanda as a key player in the African film scene.
Co-produced by Rwandan filmmaker Annette Uwizeye, who previously worked on The 600: The Soldiers’ Story, and Zimbabwean filmmaker Tariro Washe, the film emphasizes the importance of Africans telling their own stories. Directed by Zimbabwean filmmaker Steven Chikosi, Alkebulan aims to highlight the creativity and diversity of Africa’s many cultures.
With such a strong Rwandan cast, the film will not only showcase African talent but also position Rwanda as a hub for filmmaking in Africa. The release of Alkebulan: The Garden of Eden promises to bring Rwandan actors to international attention while celebrating the continent’s cultural heritage.
