Rwandan Peacekeepers Honored with UN Medals in South Sudan

Rwandan peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) were awarded UN medals on Thursday, September 5, in recognition of their service.

The ceremony took place at the Rwandan peacekeepers’ base in Durupi, Central Equatorial State.

UNMISS Force Commander Lt. Gen. Mohan Subramanian, who presided over the medal parade, praised the Rwandan peacekeepers for their discipline, professionalism, and dedication. He highlighted their crucial role in maintaining security, particularly in Juba City.

Subramanian noted that Rwanda’s commitment to UN peacekeeping is reflected in its Constitution, and the Rwandan peacekeepers’ efforts demonstrate their resolve to uphold this commitment.

Brig. Gen. William Ryarasa, Sector Unit commander and Rwanda’s Senior National Representative in South Sudan, detailed the various operations conducted by Rwandan peacekeepers. These include patrols with local security forces, monitoring and respecting human rights, and gathering crucial information for civilian protection. Ryarasa also mentioned their support for UN agencies and community activities, such as medical outreach, distribution of educational materials, and environmental efforts like tree planting.

Col. John Tyson Sesonga, Rwanbatt-3 Contingent Commander, described the medal parade as a significant honor and a strong motivator for soldiers. He expressed gratitude for the support from the UNMISS leadership, the South Sudanese government, and allied contingents in fulfilling their mandated tasks.

The event featured a parade, cultural dance performances, martial arts displays, and demonstrations of weapon skills.
