Rwandan Siblings Win Bronze at Commonwealth Karate Championships

Team Rwanda’s Harifa Niyitanga, Sharifu Dushime, and Sidike Niyonkuru won bronze in the team kata competition at the 11th Commonwealth Karate Championships in Durban, South Africa, on Thursday, Nov. 28.

The Rwandan trio shared the podium with Australia, while India claimed gold and England took silver in the event.

The three siblings are part of a five-member Rwandan squad competing in various individual and team kumite (fighting) categories. The competition, which runs from Nov. 28 to Dec. 2, marks the first of their matches, with individual events set to begin Friday.

The team departed Kigali on Wednesday night to participate in the championships.
