FIFA has officially selected Saudi Arabia as the host for the 2034 Men’s World Cup, the governing body confirmed Wednesday.
The Saudi bid was the only proposal submitted and received overwhelming support from more than 200 FIFA member associations during an online meeting led by FIFA President Gianni Infantino in Zurich.
While the decision has sparked criticism from some quarters, both FIFA and Saudi officials argue that the tournament will foster progress, particularly in advancing women’s rights and freedoms.
The announcement coincided with FIFA’s approval of the sole bid for the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay will also host one match each as part of the 104-game schedule.
The 2030 World Cup will mark the 100th anniversary of Uruguay hosting the inaugural tournament in 1930.
