Sol Generation’s “Press Play” Initiative Culminates in Debut of “Release Unfreeze” by Female Finalists
In a groundbreaking move for Eastern Africa’s music scene, Sol Generation has successfully concluded its “Press Play” initiative, culminating in the release of “Release Unfreeze,” a project by the program’s top female artists. Launched in August 2023, the initiative aimed to identify, support, and elevate female talent in the region, providing them with essential skills and exposure to succeed in the competitive music industry.
“Press Play” sought to “discover, nurture, and promote female artists across Eastern Africa,” according to Sol Generation. The label’s inclusive approach saw participation from a diverse group of female artists hailing from countries including Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), South Sudan, Somalia, and Eritrea. The program transformed these aspiring musicians into polished professionals by honing their skills, enhancing their brand presence, and facilitating access to both physical and digital marketplaces.
William Nanjero, the Chief Executive Officer of Sol Generation, emphasized the program’s broader ambition to uplift the entire Eastern African music industry. “Our goal is to augment the technical acumen of creative economy stakeholders, thereby elevating the standard and quality of music and fostering a vibrant ecosystem within the region,” Nanjero stated.
Participants underwent a comprehensive artist development regimen, encompassing auditions, songwriting, brand building, marketing strategies, financial management, and effective music distribution techniques. The initiative, backed by the Ignite Culture Fund and orchestrated in collaboration with the British Council and Heva Fund, focused predominantly on female musicians and concluded with the production of an Extended Play (EP) record for the four standout participants.
The EP, titled “Release Unfreeze,” showcases the talents of finalists Wakesho, Lukundo, Bakhita, and Juanita. It embodies their six-month journey of artistic and personal growth, characterized by a distinctive blend of afro fusion and futuristic sounds. “Release Unfreeze” not only marks a significant milestone for the artists involved but also signifies a forward leap for the representation and empowerment of female artists in Eastern Africa’s music landscape.
