Shannen Doherty, the actress renowned for her roles in iconic TV shows like “Beverly Hills 90210” and “Charmed,” has died at the age of 53 after battling cancer.
Doherty’s publicist, Leslie Sloane, confirmed her death on Saturday, stating, “It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. The devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie.”
Beginning her career at an early age, Doherty gained fame as Brenda Walsh in “Beverly Hills 90210,” where she portrayed one of a group of teenagers navigating life’s challenges in affluent Beverly Hills. Her portrayal earned her multiple award nominations.
Afterward, she reprised her role in a 2008 reboot of the series, showing her character’s evolution into a theater actress.
Doherty was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and underwent extensive treatment including a mastectomy, radiation, and chemotherapy. Though she announced remission in 2017, the cancer returned in 2019, spreading to her brain and bones. Despite her health battles, she remained resolute, sharing her journey openly on social media.
“I’m not done with living. I’m not done with loving. I’m not done with creating,” she told People magazine in November 2023.
Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Doherty began acting as a child, appearing in several TV series before landing her breakthrough role in the 1985 film “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” She later starred in the cult classic “Heathers” and found continued success in TV with “Charmed” and other series.
Outside of acting, Doherty was known for her advocacy for animal rights and authored the semi-autobiographical book “Badass,” encouraging young women to embrace life with confidence.
Doherty is survived by her husband, photographer Kurt Iswarienko, whom she married in 2011.
