Snoop Dogg Takes on Role as America’s Olympic Cheerleader

The American rapper has emerged as a prominent supporter of U.S. athletes, frequently seen cheering from the stands. Snoop Dogg has been spotted dancing with the U.S. women’s gymnastics team, donning equestrian gear to back American horseback riders, and even experimenting with judo skills.

His enthusiasm has energized the Games, captivating audiences in Paris and online. NBC’s viewership numbers reflect the heightened interest, with Snoop Dogg’s involvement playing a significant role.

After gaining attention for viral clips during his hosting stint with comedian Kevin Hart on NBC’s Peacock platform during the Tokyo Olympics, the network elevated Snoop Dogg’s role for 2024 to that of special correspondent. However, he has taken his role even further, becoming a visible and high-energy cheerleader for American athletes across various sports.

Snoop Dogg began his involvement with a ceremonial role as one of the final torchbearers before last week’s opening ceremony. The 52-year-old rapper, whose real name is Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., carried the Olympic flame through the streets of Saint-Denis, near the Stade de France.

Although his role as a special correspondent and torchbearer was announced in advance, his continuous presence and enthusiastic support have been a delightful surprise for viewers. “We’ve been pleasantly surprised by his popularity, but you never underestimate Snoop Dogg,” Molly Solomon, NBC’s executive producer of the Olympics, said this week. She described him as an “ambassador of happiness.”

Snoop Dogg’s support has been evident throughout the Games. He was seen dancing and wearing a Simone Biles t-shirt during the U.S. women’s gymnastics team’s performance. He has also cheered on tennis star Coco Gauff and volleyball player Kelly Cheng, among others.

On Saturday, Snoop Dogg joined celebrity chef Martha Stewart at the equestrian events, dressed in full horse riding attire. He participated in a promotional judo event where he was awarded an honorary black belt and received a swimming lesson from American swimming legend Michael Phelps.

Some suggest that the rapper’s presence has contributed to the increase in ratings. From July 26, the day of the opening ceremony, the five-day total audience average reached 34 million viewers, a 79% increase from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, which had lower viewership due to the pandemic.

Despite the boost in ratings and social media buzz, Snoop Dogg says he is simply enjoying the experience. Reflecting on his unexpected role, he told NBC Nightly News’ Lester Holt that he never imagined being part of the Olympics. “I’m the biggest kid in the crowd,” Snoop Dogg said.
