Danny Jordaan, president of the South African Football Association (SAFA) and a key figure in securing the 2010 FIFA World Cup for South Africa, has been arrested on charges of fraud and theft.
Jordaan is accused of misusing approximately R1.3 million ($72,372) in SAFA funds to hire a public relations firm and a private security company for his personal use.
The arrest follows a raid in March by South Africa’s Special Investigating Unit at SAFA’s offices, where electronic devices and documents were seized for further investigation. Police spokesperson Katlego Mogale confirmed the raid and subsequent arrest, which also involved one other SAFA official and a businessman.
Jordaan and the others are scheduled to appear in Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
