Ali Hassan Mwinyi, Tanzania’s revered former president, has died at the age of 98, President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced. Mwinyi, who led the country from 1985 to 1995 after succeeding founding President Julius Nyerere, passed away just months shy of his 99th birthday.
During his decade in office, Mwinyi was instrumental in steering Tanzania through crucial economic and political reforms, leaving a lasting impact on the nation’s trajectory. His passing has elicited a wave of tributes, with figures from all political backgrounds recognizing his significant contributions to Tanzania’s progress.
President Hassan disclosed that Mwinyi had been under medical care in London, UK, since November of the previous year due to a chest illness. His condition led to his return to Tanzania, where he was admitted to Mzena Hospital until his death.
The nation now enters a period of mourning as announced by President Hassan, reflecting on Mwinyi’s enduring legacy. The former president’s funeral is scheduled for March 2 in Zanzibar, his final resting place.
President Hassan, expressing her condolences, stated, “On behalf of the government of the United Republic of Tanzania, I extend my condolences to the family, relatives, friends, and all Tanzanians for this great loss to the nation.”
In a mark of respect and to honor Mwinyi’s memory, President Hassan has declared a seven-day period of national mourning. During this time, the national flags will be flown at half-mast across Tanzania, symbolizing the country’s deep respect and gratitude for Mwinyi’s service and leadership.
