Henley & Partners has unveiled the 2024 rankings for the world’s most influential passports. The Henley Passport Index, recognized as the original and authoritative passport ranking, sheds light on the strength of passports by assessing their visa-free access to countries. This comprehensive index relies on exclusive data provided by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), offering a nuanced and up-to-date perspective on global travel freedoms.
Maintaining their stronghold, Japan and Singapore continue to lead the global passport rankings, offering visa-free access to an impressive 194 out of 227 destinations. Joining the top tier are four European Union member countries—Germany, Spain, France, and Italy.
Once again, Europe dominates the rankings, with a total of 27 countries securing positions in the top 10. South Korea secures the second position, while Australia and New Zealand claim the 6th spot with access to 189 destinations, just ahead of the American passport, offering access to 188 destinations.
Breaking into the rankings at 26th place is the Seychelles, marking the first appearance of an African country in the Henley & Partners ranking. The archipelago, with 156 visa-free destinations, jumps three places from the previous year. Following closely is another popular tourist destination, Mauritius, securing the 30th position with access to 150 visa-free destinations.
Venturing further down the list, the first continental African country to make an appearance is South Africa, claiming the 53rd position. Leading its southern African neighbors, South Africa outperforms Botswana (59th), Lesotho, and Namibia (65th), as well as eSwatini (66th).
In East Africa, Kenya and Malawi jointly occupy the 67th position, with Tanzania following closely in 69th. Morocco and Tunisia make their debut in 71st position, representing North Africa along with Zambia.
Maintaining its position as the first country in West Africa, Gambia secures the 72nd spot, marking a notable jump of five places. Following closely are Cape Verde and Uganda.
The majority of African countries follow in succession, with Somalia holding the least favorable position as the weakest African passport, securing the 99th spot with access to 36 destinations.
