Former President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that Elon Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy will lead a newly established Department of Government Efficiency, a non-governmental agency aimed at reducing federal waste and streamlining operations.
Musk and Ramaswamy will work closely with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to implement reforms and introduce a more entrepreneurial approach to government processes.
Musk, known for his support of Dogecoin, has called the agency “Doge” and said he plans to document all actions publicly for transparency, including creating a leaderboard to highlight inefficient government spending. Ramaswamy also expressed his commitment to the initiative on social media.
Since Musk and Ramaswamy are not government employees, they are exempt from federal disclosure requirements. The pair aims to complete their work by July 4, 2026, aligning with Trump’s vision of a smaller, more efficient government as a “gift” for the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Musk, who has called for a $2 trillion reduction in government spending, has received mixed reactions. Supporters see his involvement as a potential driver of meaningful reform, while critics point to his history of conflicts with regulations, raising questions about his ability to navigate the challenges of government reform.
