The recognition, part of the publication’s prestigious “POWER 40” list, highlights his transformative contributions to music and culture over more than two decades in the entertainment industry.
Since its founding in 1970, Essence Magazine has been a leading voice for the Black community, celebrating trailblazers across sectors such as entertainment, politics, and activism. The annual “POWER 40” list honors those who break barriers and inspire others, and Basa’s inclusion cements his place as a visionary shaping the music landscape.
Basa’s career journey is a testament to his ability to elevate music and culture to a global audience. Currently serving as the Director of Black Music & Culture at YouTube, Basa has played a crucial role in amplifying emerging genres like Afrobeat and Dancehall. His work includes educating artists and labels on optimizing YouTube’s tools, helping reshape the way music is consumed worldwide.
Tuma Basa’s influence extends far beyond YouTube. During his tenure at Spotify, Basa curated the groundbreaking “RapCaviar” playlist, which amassed over 10 million followers and became one of the platform’s most influential playlists. The playlist was instrumental in elevating hip-hop artists to global prominence and cementing the genre’s mainstream success.
In 2020, Basa further showcased his prowess as a tastemaker by contributing to Burna Boy’s Grammy-winning album Twice as Tall.
