British heavyweight Tyson Fury has announced his retirement from boxing, again, a month after losing a rematch to Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk.
The 36-year-old Fury made the announcement in a brief video posted to his Instagram account on Monday. In the video, he said, “Hi everybody, I’m going to make this short and sweet. I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing. It’s been a blast, I’ve loved every single minute of it, and I’m going to end with this: Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody, see you on the other side.”
Fury’s mention of Dick Turpin, the infamous 18th-century English highwayman and horse thief, was left unexplained.
Fury’s retirement comes after his unanimous decision loss to Usyk on December 21 in Saudi Arabia. Despite the defeat, Fury landed 144 of 509 punches (28%) compared to Usyk’s 179 of 423 punches (42%). Fury had been visibly upset with the decision following the fight.
