Social media has erupted with news of the arrest of Ugandan dancehall artist Fik Gaza, also known as Shafick Dangote, who is currently detained in Saudi Arabia. The circumstances surrounding his detention are still unclear, but it has been reported that the Gaza Empire Crew boss was arrested for performing at a house party—a practice considered illegal in Saudi Arabia without proper authorization.
According to sources, Fik Gaza traveled to Saudi Arabia on a visitor’s visa and lacked the necessary work permit for his performance. A video circulating on social media shows the “Banana” singer in what appears to be a detention facility, pleading for assistance. “Help me my people, the authorities on this side are very tough,” he is heard saying in the video.
The Uganda Musicians Association (UMA) has publicly condemned the arrest. A statement from the UMA highlighted that Fik Gaza was detained over alleged visa irregularities and dress code violations. The association expressed concern for his well-being and has urged both Ugandan and Saudi authorities to work towards his swift and safe return.
Prominent figures, including musician-turned-politician Bobi Wine, have voiced their support for Fik Gaza. Wine, currently in the UK, shared on his social platforms that efforts are being made to establish the facts and assist Fik Gaza. He noted that this incident is one of many involving Ugandan artists abroad.
Entertainment critic Edward Ssendikadiwa also commented on the incident, advising Ugandan artists to seek knowledgeable advice before accepting performance engagements abroad to avoid legal troubles.
The Ugandan government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been called upon to intervene, particularly by engaging the Embassy of the Republic of Uganda and the Permanent Mission to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Riyadh to secure the artist’s release.
